Summary: Provides basic care to patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
Performs in a competent and timely manner basic care procedures as assigned by the licensed nurse.
Produces recordings of electromotive variations in patient's heart muscle, using electrocardiograph (ECG), to provide data for diagnosis of heart ailments.
Uses appropriate equipment for all procedures and appropriate tube types for tests ordered. Demonstrates competency in all necessary LIS modules/functions.
Inspects and labels the specimen, rejecting those that were inappropriately collected, processed or labeled. Ensures that the specimen is received in the clinical laboratory in a timely manner. Dispenses specimens and test information to the appropriate clinical or testing area, and ensures that technologist is aware of testing status.
Provides phlebotomy procedures under the directive of a registered nurse.
Observes and records patient rhythm strips at intervals defined by policy and notifies nurse when patient needs to be assessed.
Orients, instructs, and trains assigned personnel and/or students.
Timely reporting to supervising licensed nurse any changes in the patient s condition or vital signs.
Timely and accurate documentation of all assigned/required tasks/duties.
Education: High School diploma/GED preferred or equivalent experience required.
Post High School vocational/specialized training"
Experience: One (1) year clinical experience in hospital or nursing home preferred. One year previous phlebotomy experience in a health care setting OR certification as a phlebotomist through an accredited agency required .
Licenses/Certifications: Current BLS certification.
