Community Health Systems Scheduler (PAC Center) in Florence, South Carolina


This position in the PAC is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the patient appointment, including authorizations and insurance verification. This position relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job and works under immediate supervision. Customer service skills, computer skills and proper phone etiquette are essential for the position. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Answer telephone in a timely and courteous manner

Take and record patient information per computerized scheduling system training

Enter new, confirm or update patient demographic information and insurance information in the scheduling system to ensure information is accurate and complete at all times

Verify insurance eligibility; if assistance is needed, contact the PAC Insurance Coordinator

Consult with referring physician s office to ensure written and/or electronic orders exist and obtain them as needed

Schedule appointments with physicians and mid-levels using reason for visit/appointment type as indicated in scheduling system

Inform patients about set appointments and provide them with information concerning physician s office and any documents they may need to take with them to the appointment

Optimize and increase efficiency of visit or procedure by recommending potential alternatives

Notify appropriate personnel of any scheduling change due to patient cancellation in a timely fashion

Communicate perceived problem issues to Scheduling PAC Lead, and Supervisor

Exhibits willingness and responsiveness to supervisor s request. Fulfills additional responsibilities within the expertise of the job scope

Participates with other department members in generating and implementing ideas to enhance productivity

Participates in on-going education activities to develop, maintain, and enhance professional expertise as monitored by supervision

Consistently adheres to all policies/procedures of the PAC

Adheres to HIPAA Compliance





High school diploma or GED

A certificate or associate's degree in medical assisting or medical office administration is preferred


Minimum of 1 year experience in a medical office setting is required and previous call center experience is preferred

Required Technical Skills and Abilities-

Telephone, customer service, word processing, and computer experience is required

Knowledge of medical terminology and scheduling templates

Knowledge of one or more of the following specialties: Primary Care, Women s Health and OB/GYN, Pediatric Services, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Neurology

Knowledge of computer applications, and business office procedures

Knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation to type patient information

Required Competencies-

Ability to respond to stressful/emergency situations in a calm and effective manner

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with providers, patients, employees and the public

The candidate needs to be someone who can think on his/her feet and get the job done quickly

Since patient schedulers are usually a first point of contact in a medical setting, they need to be pleasant, knowledgeable about the facility and its services, and possess exceptional communication skills

Patient schedulers need to spend a great amount of time on the telephone and email which is why it is important for them to be able to live up to the demands of doing repetitive work on a daily basis
