JOB SUMMARY: The Radiation Oncology Nurse is a member of the Radiation Oncology treatment team familiar with nursing aspects of Radiation Oncology. The Radiation Oncology Nurse has the training and expertise necessary to provide nursing care and to assist the Radiation Oncologist, Radiation Therapists, and Medical Physicists.

  • Perform routine duties independent of supervision but consults with the Radiation Oncologist, Clinical Leader, or Director as required.

  • Basic knowledge of pathophysiology and psychopathology as relates to oncology and other disease processes

  • Demonstrated general computer proficiency, report generation, form design and document editing abilities

  • Must maintain confidentiality of data and patient information according to HIPPA regulations

  • Interpret, order, and perform physician orders.

  • Possess simple mathematical skills.

  • Proficient PC-based computer skills MAJOR DUTIES: NURSING

  • Interview and assess new patients consultations including medical history

  • Instruct patient of any preparations for exams, tests, or procedures

  • Assist physician with procedures (catheter removal, implants, H&P, exams, etc.).

  • Dress wounds, implant, or catheter sites

  • Weigh and assess patients weekly for problems to report to physician

  • Measure patient vital statistics as needed or required

  • Clean all medical instruments after usage

  • Answer patient s treatment related questions as needed

  • Consult physician on patient prescription questions from pharmacies

  • Educate patients on diet, skin care, and possible side effects

  • Provide educational materials to patients if requested

  • Monitor and maintain educational materials

  • Attend Clinical Cancer Committee meetings and tumor conferences

  • Monitor and order nursing supplies as needed CLERICAL

  • Schedule all appointments for new and old patients

  • Obtain and document all records for new and old patient consultations

  • Register new and old patients for consultation

  • Document and assess patient insurance for appropriate coverage

  • Obtain required pre-certs, referrals, and verify approval

  • Input, review, and reconcile all daily and weekly patient charges

  • Answer all internal and external phone calls at clinical desk

  • Print out daily master schedule and distribute in designated areas

  • Tabulate monthly follow-up appointments and new and old patient consultations

  • Copy designated portions of inpatient charts and file in RO chart

  • Sort and file patient internal and external reports, consultations, histories, RO charts

  • Manage RO patient transcription process including pickup, delivery, and distribution to referring physicians

  • Order tests, exams, or procedures as prescribed by physician

  • Request, obtain and return x-rays needed for patient consultation

  • Obtain lab reports, x-ray reports, and patient demographics from hospital computer system

  • Monitor and order front office supplies as needed

  • Sort and deliver departmental mail


RN with current state license. Must have at least three years clinical experience as a Staff Nurse in a comparable area.
