The job description and criteria based job performance evaluation emphasizes the criteria expected in the performance of the Pediatric Unit Registered Nurse. The Registered Nurse is responsible for the care of Pediatric patient. The RN collaborates with other nurses, physicians, and allied health personnel to ensure efficient and effective work flow of their scheduled shift and a smooth transition to the next shift. The RN is expected to be able to perform the duties of unit secretary and nurse aide as defined in their respective job descriptions and participate in performance improvement activities. The Registered Nurse works closely with the Director, the Pediatric Unit Coordinator, and the charge Nurse, members of the Maternal/Child Tract, medical staff, as well as other professional staff, ancillary department members, visitors and families.
Responsible for compliance with overall nursing practice standards of the specialty area (Reports to Department Patient Care Manager)
Responsible for compliance with standards during assigned shift (Reports to Administrative Supervisor)
Uses established principles of delegation and supervision to direct the activities of all licensed and non-licensed care givers and support staff in the delivery of patient care during their assigned shift
Uses independent judgment to ensure optimal delivery of patient care and appropriate use of available resources

The Charge Nurse is responsible for the provision of patient care, through the initiation and continuation of the nursing process; a plan of care is developed based upon assessed identified needs. The Charge Nurse works closely with the Patient Care Manager, Medical Staff, the clinical staff, as well as other professional staff, ancillary department members, visitors and families. The Charge Nurse coordinates the care for the patients in the Pediatric unit. The Charge Nurse is responsible for implementing the physician s orders after they are written. The Charge Nurse (RN) must possess expertise, knowledge, as well as clinical decision-making skills to intervene appropriately for the acute and non-acute patient. The Charge Nurse is responsible for all clinical aspects of nursing care on the unit. The Charge Nurse must demonstrate the ability to respond and provide direction to staff during changing workloads and have the ability to organize, delegate, and oversee work performance of all staff on duty.

Licensein good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Texas.
BCLS for HealthcareProviders through American Heart Association current upon hire and requiredthroughout employment
PALS- is required within 6months if Pediatrics is home department and throughout employment
NRP –is requiredwithin 3 months ifNursery/NICU is home department and throughout employment
ACLS- is required within 6 months if OB is homedepartment and throughout employment
ContinuingEducation Program- AWHONN ‘s (Association of Women s Health, Obstetrical andNeonatal Nursing) POEP (Perinatal Orientation Educational Program) and NOEP (Neonatal Orientation EducationProgram) Completion of both courses preferred within 1 year of signature of this job description.
